What makes a court not so great?

Foregoing primer and using a push brush to paint down the line is quick but results in uneven color and bleeding.

Armor crack was used to cover a crack. These edges weren't properly feathered out and the repair work remains visible. The repair was stopped short and should have run to the end.

These edges weren't tapered or cut straight. While not necessary, clean edges definitely add to the court's beauty.

Any nails or screws should be painted pre-installation. Its the little things that really make a difference.

One of the stranger things we have come across when repairing a court. Duct tape used as crack repair. Needless to say the owner was not aware or happy.

Roots need to be cut or blocked from creeping under your court. Here, we jack-hammered out the asphalt and removed the heaving roots.

Artificial turf is seamed together with specialized glue and mylar. These were nailed which lead to the seams splitting, the carpets crawling and dangerous exposed nails.

Literal corners were cut on this new court. After line striping, knives were used to remove the adhered tape which created "alligator" cracks.

The concrete footings were too short and not wide enough. The poles are leaning dangerously and an enormous safety hazard.

Square net post footings are nightmares for tennis courts. They are almost always guaranteed to crack on all corners. We recommend circular footings.

The gate pictured here was measured & cut incorrectly and was left warped and contorted.

Even if the concrete footings are circular, filling the concrete flush with the surface will make it heave. Asphalt needs to be poured over the base and should be thicker than the top.

This court was covered with new asphalt but no slip sheet to keep the cracks reflecting from underneath. The slab did not adhere and crawled off the edge of the court.

When installing asphalt, the equipment should never stop moving. Here you can see low areas that have formed where the heavy equipment spent too much time in certain spots.

Tree stumps were buried under the base of this court. The stumps decomposed and formed large sinkholes.

Asphalt is laid in strips. If the edges cool down before being able to properly adhere to the next strip, you will get end to end structural cracks.

Overlay edging tape keeps all the moisture and debris out. These edges weren't properly installed allowing the adhesive used to rot after only three years.

The pitch of a court is recommended to be 'side to side'. When the pitch is high in the middle and low on the far ends, the court tends to sink and crack down the middle.

Proper drainage will not only keep your court from flooding but it also makes sure the moisture from underneath doesn't come up through the surface and create serious and permanent damage.

Interlocking tile courts need to be properly stretched and anchored. They can end up pulling away from the edges and contracting to form ridges on the surface.

Donald N. Pierson

Owner, Founder

Our fearless leader Donald Pierson has been in the athletic court construction business since he was 14 years old. He's a master problem solver and excels at the tough jobs others may say are impossible.

Don graduated from MMC as a certified civil engineering tech. Then, while still in school obtaining his engineering degree from RIT , he was hired by standard oil of California as a designs engineer. During his studies, Don continued to work for his mentor learning tennis court construction, has held a home inspection license since 2009, is a NCCCO certified crane operator and spent time running an asphalt plant. You couldn't ask for a better or more qualified resume for athletic court construction!

In the extremely rare times Don isnt working, he enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, going on fishing trips and spoiling his chihuahua named Dolly.
